You will notice that we refer to ‘Weight Control’; and not ‘Weight Loss’. The reason for this is that a person can have issues with his or her weight, and it’s not always a case of simply shedding weight (or even gaining), but a process of bringing your weight under your own control.
Unless you have a medical problem with your metabolism i.e. An Underactive Thyroid or Crohn’s Disease (where extreme Weight Loss is common), then the principle of achieving and maintaining your ideal weight is very simple and goes as follows: all of us (Men and Women) need to consume a certain number of Calories (including Fats) each day just to maintain our body weight at rest.
For Men It’s between 2,200 and 2,500 Calories a Day, and for Women it’s between 1,800 and 2,000 a Day. So depending on your gender, if you woke up tomorrow, didn’t even get out of bed and did nothing else all day before going back to sleep, you would need to consume one of those quantities of calories just to remain the same weight! Those Calories should also include all of your daily recommended Nutrients, Vitamins, and Minerals.
Not surprising then, and assume that you actually do get out of bed, your current weight is a direct product of:
Your Daily intake of Calories
less Calories that your body burns with normal activities (walking, cycling, etc.)
less Additional Calories that your body burns as a result of exercise.
So if it’s that simple, why has dieting turned into a multi–billion pound industry filled with every conceivable diet known to man (or woman)?
The answer is actually a lot less simple than it should be. We (people in general) do not just eat and drink when we are Hungry or Thirsty. We also eat & drink when we are Stressed, when we are Fearful, When we are Anxious, When we are Happy, When we are Sad, When we feel Depressed or Down, and not forgetting when we feel Bored or we just eat out of Habit & Routine. In fact, the ‘Domino’ effect goes like this:
It’s just a vicious circle, or as we call it: a behavioural pattern, that must be interrupted if it’s going to be Changed and Replaced with a Better Behavioural Pattern.
On top of the obvious weight issues that this eating regime brings with it, there are other side effects such as:
Contrary to what the newspapers might lead you to believe, there is No Miracle, there is No Super Diet Pill and there is No Secret Formula.
Your eating and exercising habits have become a part of your daily routine you’re your ‘conditioning’. Which means that they have become routines that you probably carry out oblivious too and without thinking about.
If you consciously wrote down everything that you ate or drank, the time that you ate or drank it, and (most important), how you were feeling before and immediately after you consumed it for a complete 24 hour period, you would see the emerging pattern and probably be surprised, no, shocked, at the quantity of calories that you were consuming. Try it tomorrow!!
The answer lies in the paragraph above. We are creatures of Habit. And as so, we eat at certain times, snack at certain times, and drink at certain times, and not always because we are hungry or thirsty. Our eating & drinking has a ‘Pattern’, and the Pattern or Habit has been well learned and well and truly tested to give you the same results. The results can be pleasure, calmness, a feeling of comfort and of being looked after. However, it’s this habit and routine that is the root cause of your inability to control your weight.
